Yi Peng Lantern Festival (Yee Peng)
This festival is celebrated primarily in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai which sees thousands of "khom loi" paper lanterns launched simultaneously into the night sky along with a wish for good fortune in the new year. The ceremony has its roots in Buddhism and is held each year for three nights, starting with the night of the full moon. It sometimes coincides with Loy Krathong, when lotus-shaped baskets decorated with flowers and candles are released into rivers.
