Verdun (Battlefield)
This wide swarth of battle-scarred land north of the city of Verdun was the site of the infamous and bloody WWI Battle of Verdun in 1916, which claimed 714,231 lives in 10 months, making it the longest and one of the most costly battles in human history. The landscape has also been permanently altered and mostly uninhabitable due to toxic shells, unexploded bombs, and other items still buried underground.
