Timbuktu

This city's fame stems from the 17th century, when it was flourishing under a golden age as a major economic, learning, and cultural centre of the Mali Empire. Since 1863, the reference "go to Timbuktu" has become a popular metaphor among the Western world to signify a fabled or faraway place, and the journey there was very dangerous and difficult before the late 20th century.
