Monte Cassino (Montecassino)
This hilltop monastery was built in 529 and has endured a tumultuous history of ups and downs, starting with its sacking by Germanic Lombards in 570, a golden age of fine arts and craftmanship in the 11th and 12 centuries, and most recently the bombing by Allied planes in 1944. It has since been rebuilt and is now a popular tourist attraction.
