Hashima Island (Gunkanjima: Battleship Island)
This coal mining island town near to Nagasaki hit a peak population of 5,259 in 1959, but the depletion of the coal reserves caused the residents to gradually depart, leaving an abandoned "Battleship-shaped" island of concrete ruins which has now become a surreal post-apocalyptic tourist attraction.
