Fes (Fez)
This northeastern Moroccan city was founded under Idrisid rule during the 8th-9th centuries CE, quickly rising to become an important hub for religion, education and trade, earning it the nicknames "Mecca of the West" and "Athens of Africa". Today, it is known as the country’s cultural, spiritual, and culinary capital, with numerous historical landmarks such as the Medina of Fez, University of Al-Qarawiyyin, Chouara Tannery, and more.
