Eastern State Penitentiary
This former American prison pioneered the practice of solitary confinement, and held notorious criminals such as Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton, becoming a model for future American prisons. Closed in 1971, it is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark and famously haunted place, where it is claimed that ghosts of the former inmates roam the prison grounds.
