The European Organization for Nuclear Research, derived from the name Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire, was established in 1954 with 23 member states and operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. It is most famous for being the birthplace of the World Wide Web and as the site of the underground Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and highest-energy particle collider.
