This city's name is derived from "Amstelredamme", a nearby dam in the river Amstel. It is known as the "Venice of the North" due to its large number of canals and is now an alpha-world city with numerous attractions, including its historic waterways, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Natura Artis Magistra, Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, NEMO, the red-light district and vibrant nightlife.
