A bedroom-sized partition room (~100 sq ft) on average costs about S$1,500, which includes labour plus sound-insulated plasterboard walls and door. Other considerations include:
- Rerouting an air-con (usually an extra air-con) to the partition room.
- Adding a small window/skylight at the top of the wall/above the door to let some natural light into the room.
- You may not be able to hang anything heavy, such as paintings, on thin plasterboard walls.
LOFT
For private properties, a loft space (quasi-second floor) can be created if you have a high ceiling (about 3 m) for extra living space (and/or greater rental yield). But do check with your estate management if it is allowed (HDB flats are not allowed to have lofts).
PATIOS & BALCONIES
Since these places are both outdoor-indoor areas (sheltered yet exposed to the elements), you should only use waterproof and heat-resistant materials. Live plants are a popular choice, both potted or hanging (See: Plants), along with woven chairs (wicker or rattan).
Some balconies also use composite (man-made) wood due to its elegant look and long lasting qualities.
